Welcome. My name is Moira Elsley. Come in and have a look around my virtual gallery and listen to 'Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme' by Paganini, which is the introduction piece to the music from the film, "Somewhere in Time".

I hope that you like my new website as much as I do.

watercolour on 300 lb. Arches paper
In September, 2004, I participated in an Art Cunanan workshop and this is one of the pieces accomplished. Art is a terrific instructor, who teaches painting watercolour using an easel, something that I had never previously attempted. The result is a more vivid, looser impressionist painting and was great fun. Thanks again, Art.

While driving to town early one November morning, this scene at Big Lake, Manitoulin Island, called out to me and I had to stop the car to take a photograph. Much of the scene has my interpretation of colour, and the loons had already left for the south for winter. Michael Wilcox's wonderful colours and colour system and Daniel Smith's autumn and quinacridone colours were my choices here, and good ones, wouldn't you agree? "Sunset on Big Lake, Manitoulin Island", Watercolour, Framed (20" X 29"). The original is no longer available, but prints and cards can still be ordered. If you are interested, you may reach me through my Guest Book.
watercolour on 140 lb. Arches paper

This is our granddaughter, Ella, and she was a beautiful wee girl and now a lovely young lady. :)
watercolour on 300 lb. Arches paper. This is my friend, Lee Ann, with her daughter, Katy, whose grandmother, Phyllis, is a close friend of mine. The reference photograph was unposed, as you can see. The new mom, very tired from night feedings, is fast asleep, baby Katie cuddled beside her. The similar posture in each is what inspired me to paint this watercolour. Simon and Garfunkle would perhaps have liked this one, from "Mother and Child Reunion".
watercolour on 300 lb. Arches paper.

This painting was just a bit of winter 2004 watercolour that I spent the day with recently. Fun to paint and experiment a little with some new watercolours, from Daniel Smith and Holbein, and wet in wet technique. There are numerous old barns throughout the Manitoulin and rail fences are the usual here.
I read an article on the homeless, and felt compelled to do this piece. Prior to retirement, my work had occasionally brought me into contact with those less fortunate. The greater percentage of this watercolour is of a gentleman from a Southern Ontario city. He was often seen at the soup kitchen, located about three blocks from where I worked for a couple of years, and who was also highlighted in an article. The lesser percentage is of a gentleman from Petrolia, now deceased. I gave 'Street Person' a blue hat and blue eyes because this produced such wonderful contrast to the darker values. Jurors for the Northern Ontario Artists Association chose 'Street Person' for the Exhibition that traveled to various galleries throughout Northern Ontario during 1999/2000. He is now hanging in our cottage Gallery and available.... framed measuring 17 1/4 " X 20 1/4 ".
This is a watercolour on 300 lb. Arches paper. I took the reference photograph for this painting at table level, using my 35 mm SLR camera with 200 macro-zoom lens. Our grandson, Josh, was learning to shoot crokinole and said, "I'm going to get a twenty, Grandma", and he did. "Shooting for Twenty", along with "Golden Manitoulin Slippers", was shown in galleries throughout Northern Ontario in the 2004 Northern Ontario Artist Association Juried Exhibition. You may see the original at Manitou Studio & Gallery in our cottage on Lake Manitou. Prints, numbered 7-20 are available by leaving a message in my Guest Book.
This painting was commissioned by our friends Linda and Reg Roy as a Christmas gift for Reg's daughter, Tracy and son-in-law, Darrin. Amber and Cooper are their German Shorthairs.
This is our tow-headed grandson, Connor, with his cousin, Jordy, looking for 'neat stuff' on the lake at the cottage. He was at another Grandma's cottage, but I took a bit of liberty, as artists are wont to do. The painting is called "Do you see what I see?", and it hangs in Connor's home.
